Dental implant surgery can be one of the most important decisions one can make when it comes to their oral health. With any surgery, however, there are side effects that come along with the procedure. Let’s take a look at the best route to take when on the road to recovery.

Post-Surgery

As the case with most surgeries, the area that has been recently worked on will be sensitive for some time. Recovery time will differ from patient to patient, however, the more teeth that are added, the longer the recovery time will be. It’s strongly recommended to avoid contact with the newly repaired area for at least a few days. Holding an ice pack to the outside of the injured area can assist in the recovery process by using the 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off method.

Any type of vigorous sucking or spitting action should be avoided. It is strongly advised to avoid drinking from a straw during the first few days following surgery. Smoking is also prohibited for the first 2-3 days after the operation as this could induce bleeding. You will be allowed to brush and floss the day after the procedure, but avoid the recently repaired area for a couple of days. When the area feels well enough to receive cleaning, soft, cautions brushing will be needed to ensure that the sensitive area will not be affected. Physical or strenuous activity should be kept to a minimum until the pain has completely subsided.

Even if these steps are followed, side effects will still be experienced. Bruising and discomfort should be expected for the first few days following surgery. A lot of the side effects will depend on the patient. Some tend to recover faster than others, but it is a surgery that has a fairly quick recovery time. With dental implants being the financial commitment that it is, it is crucial that these rules be followed carefully in order to avoid prolonging recovery time.
